Accessibility statement

Accessibility on ucaspoints.com

How the calculator and the rest of the site are built to work with keyboards, screen readers, zoom and reduced motion; what we know is imperfect; and how to tell us when something fails.

Our standard

CogniPath Education, which publishes this site, aims for it to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. This statement was prepared when the site was built and is reviewed each term with the rest of the content. Reviewed September 2026.

The calculator

The calculator is the part of the site most likely to cause difficulty, so it was built with the following in mind.

  • Every control is a native button or select element, reachable and operable by keyboard in reading order. Nothing depends on hover or drag.
  • Each grade select is labelled with the qualification it belongs to, so a screen reader announces "Grade for A level" rather than "combo box".
  • Changes to the total are announced through a polite live region as "Total 112 UCAS Tariff points from 3 qualifications", so you do not need to find the number visually.
  • The large green total is display-size text and meets the 3:1 contrast ratio for large text; every smaller piece of green or orange text uses a darker shade that meets 4.5:1.
  • The number "bump" and row animations are disabled when your system asks for reduced motion.
  • If JavaScript is unavailable the live total does not work, but every value it would use is printed in tables on the same page, so the arithmetic can be done by hand.

The rest of the site

  • One heading level one per page and a logical heading order, so headings can be used to navigate.
  • A skip link to the main content is the first focusable element on every page.
  • Text can be resized to 200 per cent and the layout reflows to a single column at narrow widths without horizontal scrolling.
  • Colour is never the only carrier of meaning: the orange "no Tariff points" notice is also labelled in words, and form errors are described in text.
  • Frequently asked questions and the full tariff tables use native disclosure elements that work without scripting.
  • Fonts are self-hosted and fall back to your system font if they fail to load.
  • Focus is always visible, with a two-ring outline that remains clear on white, sky and dark backgrounds.

Known limitations

  • Unit tables on programme pages hide the "Type" column at narrow widths to avoid horizontal scrolling. The information is still stated in the sentence above each table.
  • The mobile result chip is fixed to the bottom of the screen and may overlap content when the page is zoomed heavily on a small device. It hides itself while the calculator is in view.
  • Links to PDF specifications open documents published by the awarding organisations, whose accessibility we do not control.
  • Photograph and testimonial slots are placeholders with descriptive text; when real images are added they will carry alternative text.
