Level 3 Foundation Diploma for Higher Education Studies
A one-stage preparation year for people who want to start higher education but do not have the Level 3 grades to do so through UCAS. Six units covering academic English, maths, computing, society, business and basic accounting, assessed by assignment.
Its 120 credits add nothing to a points total and will not satisfy a university offer expressed in points. What it does lead to is a Level 4 diploma delivered by London School of Planning and Management (LSPM), or first-year university entry where a university chooses to allow it. If you need Tariff points, this foundation diploma is the wrong programme for you.

In brief
This is the general foundation diploma: it does not commit you to one subject at Level 4. That makes it the sensible choice if you know you want to study further but have not settled on business, computing, health or something else. Each of the six units is 20 credits, and together they rebuild the habits that Level 4 study takes for granted: reading with a purpose, writing to a brief, handling numbers, and using a computer for more than messaging.
The programme is 120 credits and OTHM puts the total qualification time at 1,200 hours, half of it guided. Spread over an academic year that is a substantial part-time load; compressed into a shorter pattern it is close to full time. It is a stand-alone regulated qualification with its own certificate, not a year zero attached to a particular degree.

Who it suits, and who it does not
A good fit if you are
- School and college leavers who finished at 16 or 17, or whose A level or BTEC results did not land where they needed them, and who want to start now rather than spend a year on resits.
- Adults returning to study after years away from essays and maths lessons, for whom the Academic English and Foundation Mathematics units are the whole point.
- Learners educated outside the UK whose school qualifications are real but not easily read by UK providers, and who need a regulated Level 3 diploma on the Ofqual register as a reference point.
- Anyone who knows they want higher education but genuinely has not chosen a subject yet.
Look elsewhere if you are
- Anyone who needs UCAS Tariff points for a specific university offer. This diploma carries none.
- People who already hold A levels, a BTEC National or a T Level at the grades their chosen course asks for. Apply through UCAS instead.
- Applicants to regulated professions such as nursing, teaching or medicine, which set their own entry rules that this diploma does not meet on its own.
- Someone who already knows their subject and would rather spend the year on a 60-credit subject-specific foundation diploma.
What you study
six mandatory units of 20 credits each. There are no optional units, so every learner on the programme covers the same ground.
| # | Unit | Type | Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Academic English and Study Skills | Mandatory | 20 |
| 2 | Foundation Mathematics | Mandatory | 20 |
| 3 | Foundation Computing | Mandatory | 20 |
| 4 | Society and Culture | Mandatory | 20 |
| 5 | Introduction to Business | Mandatory | 20 |
| 6 | Foundation Accounting and Economics | Mandatory | 20 |
| Total | 6 units | 120 |

LSPM runs Academic English and Study Skills first and keeps it live across the whole year, because every other assignment depends on it. Sequencing is LSPM's to set and can change between intakes; confirm it when you apply. Foundation Mathematics and Foundation Computing follow, then Society and Culture, Introduction to Business and Foundation Accounting and Economics in the second half, when learners have the confidence to handle content-heavy units.
Entry requirements
OTHM sets the formal entry criteria for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it admits learners. As published by the awarding body:
- OTHM Level 3 qualifications can be offered to learners from age 16. OTHM does not specify entry requirements for these qualifications. OTHM ensures that learners admitted to the programme have sufficient capability at the right level to undertake the learning and assessment criteria.
- OTHM Centre must ensure learners are recruited with integrity onto appropriate qualifications that will meet their needs, enable and facilitate learning and achievement enable progression. The qualification is offered in English.
- English requirements: If a learner is not from a majority English-speaking country must provide evidence of English language competency. For more information visit English Language Expectations page.
There is no grade requirement. What LSPM's admissions interview looks for, as far as we have seen, is that you can read a page of ordinary prose, write a paragraph in your own words, and commit the hours. If English is not your first language LSPM will ask for evidence of your level; ask us which documents it accepts before you apply.
Source: the OTHM qualification specification (PDF), which is the definitive statement of the awarding body's criteria. LSPM's admissions team decides eligibility; ask us first if you are unsure whether you meet them.
How you are assessed
Each unit ends in one written assignment set by LSPM's tutors against OTHM's learning outcomes. Foundation Mathematics uses a worked-problem portfolio rather than an essay, and Foundation Computing includes a practical task you build and document. There are no timed examinations.
Assessment is regulated by OTHM under Ofqual's conditions. How awarding bodies and regulation work.
Where it leads: progression to Level 4
Completing all 120 credits qualifies you to progress to a Level 4 diploma at LSPM. Level 4 is the first stage of higher education on the qualifications framework, and the diplomas are offered by subject, so this is the point where you choose a direction: business, computing, health and social care, accounting, law or another subject LSPM is running that year.
From Level 4 the ladder continues to Level 5, and some universities then consider Level 5 diploma holders for direct entry to the final year of a related bachelor's degree. That decision belongs to each university and we do not name institutions or promise places. Some universities will also consider Level 3 diploma holders for first-year entry at their own discretion, but that is not a route you should plan around.
If you want to compare Level 4 subjects in education and teaching before committing to this foundation diploma, our sibling site level4diploma.org is written for exactly that question.
Questions about this programme
Does this diploma give me UCAS Tariff points?
No. UCAS has not allocated Tariff points to this qualification, so it adds nothing to a UCAS total. It is a route into Level 4 study at LSPM, not a way of meeting a points-based university offer. We say this on every page because it is the most important thing to understand before you enquire.
Can I skip units I already know, such as computing?
All six units are mandatory and the diploma is awarded on 120 credits, so every unit must be passed. If you have strong existing knowledge in one area you will simply find that assignment quicker, and your tutor can point you at the more demanding parts of the brief.
Is this the same as a university foundation year?
No. A university foundation year is Year 0 of a specific degree at that university and normally leads straight into Year 1 there. This diploma is a stand-alone regulated qualification whose progression is to a Level 4 diploma at LSPM. It is more flexible about subject choice, but it does not come with a guaranteed university place.
Which Level 3 diploma should I choose if I am undecided?
This one. It is the only programme on the site designed for people who have not picked a subject. If you already know the Level 4 direction you want, a 60-credit subject-specific foundation diploma in engineering, IT or health and social care is shorter and more focused.
What does a total qualification time of 1,200 hours mean for my week?
It is OTHM's estimate of all the time a typical learner spends: 600 guided learning hours with a tutor or on directed activity, plus around 600 hours of reading, research and assignment writing on your own. Over an academic year that is a serious part-time commitment. Ask us how LSPM schedules it before you decide.
